Information and Library Services at UEP

A special information base represents an important part of a modern university. Students, UEP employees and the public have at their disposal a large complex of study rooms, libraries and electronic information resources as well as additional services.

All these services are carried out by the Centre of Information and Library Services. The system of libraries is dominated by the main library at Zizkov, which also serves as a depository library of OECD, WB and EBRD. The main library also includes special study rooms – the Library of Pavel Eisler, which is specialized in international relations and the EU. On the library premises, there is also a multimedia study room, which includes literature covering the fields of finances, banking and accounting, publications from the IMF, the Czech national bank, etc. There is also a European Documentary Centre. In addition to the main library, UEP also runs a study library at the campus in Jižní Město, which is primarily focused on students in their first year of studies and a library for the Faculty of Management in Jindřichův Hradec. The above-mentioned libraries and study rooms are also open to the public. There are more study rooms and approximately 50 smaller libraries which are dedicated to academics only.

As far as information resources are concerned, beside traditional printed materials (books, newspapers, magazines, collections of papers, working papers, a statistical yearbook, and dictionaries) there are numerous electronic sources. In the library fund there are 460 thousand books and 400 periodical titles. More than 40 thousand books are available directly in the libraries, the others it is possible to borrow. Registered users can order the books online using the central database. The system enables one to check one’s account, search in a database of economic periodicals – FinLit – and to work with scanned texts of outstanding Czech economists. Electronic information resources (EBSCO, ProQuest 5000, Web of Knowledge, JSTOR or Czech Anopress IT) are available online from a remote computer for authorized users.

In addition to traditional library services, the Centre of Information and Library Services offers a wide range of additional services. These include consulting, elaborating of research and individual help with concrete problems. For all registered users, there is an electronic document delivery service, which enables one to order some types of documents from the library directly from the computer and to read them from the computer or to print them. The employees of the Centre of Information and Library Services actively cooperate on several projects with Czech National Library. There is also very fruitful international cooperation going on especially within European Business Schools Librarians’ Group (EBSLG).
