VŠE Hockey Team Took Second Place in the Hockey Battle of Universities in Prague.
On Thursday, October 27th, the evening before the national holiday, the sixth year of the traditional ice hockey battle between the teams of the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague, the Czech Technical University, Prague, Charles University, Prague and the University of Economics, Prague (VŠE), took place in Tipsport Arena.
In the first duel, VŠE players faced the team from the Czech University of Life Sciences, and although the first half of the match ended 1:1, the second half was masterfully dominated by the VŠE team, and the match ended 4:1. The second match, where players from Charles University stood against the Czech Technical University, the team from Charles University won. In the following fight for third position, the Czech Technical University and the Czech University of Life Sciences faced each other. The team from the Czech University of Life Sciences did not give its competitors any chances this time, and with the result 3:1 they placed third in the competition.
The highlight of the evening was the final, where the finalists struggled not only for victory in the hockey match itself, but also for the Prague Mayor’s Cup. Even though the first half of the match of the teams from VŠE and from Charles University seemed very even and the players went for a break to their locker rooms with a score of 0:0; in the second half Charles University’s team started to use their effective attack strategy and the match ended 0:2. Charles University, in the six-year history of these hockey battles won its fifth title. VŠE hockey team took marvellous second place this time.
The team of the University of Economics, Prague had great support from students and representatives of the university. The opening bully-off of both matches was performed by the Rector, Prof. Hana Machková. In the first match she faced off against the Rector of the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prof. Jiří Balík. The other one was against the Vice-Rector of Charles University, Prof. Radka Wilde. Match commentators said that it was the first purely feminine bully-off in the history of the Hockey Battle of Universities in Prague.
