The University of Economics, Prague ranked amongst the top 250 universities in the world for economics and econometrics, according to the prestigious international scale – the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017. The only other Czech university to secure a place in the ranking, was Charles University. The only other universities from the Central European region to be ranked on the scale were two universities from Poland and two from Hungary.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject uses four qualitative criteria to rank individual universities by subject. The first two criteria evaluate the international reputation of the university in the context of academia (academic reputation), as well as among employers (employer reputation). The other two indicators focus on the quality of academic research. The first of these last two criteria is the research citation per paper, which assesses the number of citations per teacher, published during the past 5 years, in the Scopus database. The other criterion is the h-index, which is a renowned methodological tool for assessing academic paper reviews.

The QS only determines the exact ranking of the top 50 universities. The order of placement of the other universities is stated within the ranges of: 51-100, 101-150, etc. Each university can receive a maximum of 100 points for each of the above-mentioned criterion. The exact order of placement of the universities by a particular criterion can be viewed online, via the QS websites.

The long-term goal of the University of Economics, Prague is to attain the leading position among the Central European universities in the field of economics. I am thrilled by this year’s results of the economics and econometry subjects. To be placed 167th in the world, and to be placed No. 1 in Central Europe; which was shared with a private university financed by George Soros; proves that in the academic reputation category, the University of Economics, Prague does indeed have a very good name in the academic sphere, and that it is a strong brand. Our university’s employer reputation score bears witness to this fact. On the other hand, the results in the academic research field are our long-term weakness, which we are fully aware of. However, I sincerely believe, that our professors will have more time for publishing academic papers with the gradual decline in the number of students,” says the Rector of the University of Economics, Prague, Prof. Hana Machková, commenting on the results of the rankings.
