On 23rd January, 2017, the results of 12th year of the annual TOP Women of the Czech Republic poll had been announced. One of those honored in the women of the Czech public sphere category was Prof. Hana Machková, the Rector of the University of Economics, Prague.

This year nearly 300 women were nominated for the poll. The nominations could be made by members of the public, individual companies, or by the appointed members of the jury. Under the leadership of Prof. Jiří Drahoš, the chairman of The Czech Academy of Sciences, the jury had selected 25 of the most successful women from the world of Czech show business, and 25 of the most successful women in Czech public life. The jury itself consisted of 16 members. Among these were such personalities as Michael Žantovský, the director of the Václav Havel Library, David Mareček, the CEO of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, or Michaela Chaloupková, a board member of ČEZ. Prizes in the “Start-up“category were also awarded to women for the first time ever this year.

The main criteria for evaluating the top women of the year were: whether they had been employed in their position at least from 1st January to 1st September of the relevant year, the amount of influence which they exert upon public life in the country, the amount of success achieved in the nominee‘s field of activity, and if her activities spill over the boundaries the institution, in which she is engaged. Other factors, which were taken into account, included the significance of the nominee’s institution, her influence on the functioning of the institution, it’s achievements which were reached during the candidate’s managerial involvement, as well as the candidate’s attitude towards social accountability.

The top three women of each category were announced during yesterday’s gala at Forum Karlín. In the public sphere category, a professor of the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS, Blanka Říhová, was the winner, while second place was awarded to Zlata Holušová, the CEO of the Colors of Ostrava Festival, with third place being taken by Milena Černá, the CEO of the Committee of Good Will, the Foundation of Olga Havlová.

The University of Economics, Prague had yet another participant in the event with Daniel Stach, a graduate of the university’s International Trade study program, being the host for the evening. Mr Stach commented on the choice of his branch of study in his interview for student magazine iList: “I find the international trade field very interesting. It is quite entertaining, how everything is connected – what happens with the Mexican market, when the Chinese National Bank offers of its exchange currency reserves. That is why International Trade was my first choice.”

To succeed for the second year in a row, in such a prestigious poll, is a major honor to me. However, the tribute is not only for me, but for the whole University of Economics in Prague, which enjoys a great reputation among the public, as well as among the jury. I am also glad, that women make more and more breakthroughs in the public sphere. For example, in 2017, I shall be working with Prof. Zažímalová, the newly elected chairperson of The Czech Academy of Sciences, Ms. Valachová, the Minister of education, or the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Czech Science Foundation, Ms. Valkárová and Prof. Hronová, respectively.” said Prof. Machková when speaking about her placing in the contest.
