Classmates and friends of Jan Palach honoured his memory at the Prague University of Economics and Business
Today at 12 o’clock a commemorative act was held at the memorial plaque made by Jan Palach’s classmates and University of Economics and Business. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Prague University of Economics and Business and Jan Palach’s classmates.
At a follow-up gathering with Rector Petr Dvořák and Chancellor Andrej Tóth, the classmates reminisced not only about their years of study together, but also about the turbulent time after Jan Palach’s death.
In the words of one of the witnesses, “Today we remember not only ourselves, but many in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and even Russia, a boy who showed the world that freedom is more precious than life.”
Despite the fact that Jan Palach is usually associated with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, he spent two whole years, i.e. most of his university student life, at the Prague University of Economics and Business. Although the Prague University of Economics and Business was not Palach’s first choice, we know that he studied the Economics of Agriculture at the then Production Economics with diligence, and it is possible that this diligence did not stem from a deeper interest in economics. The fact that he passed a total of 16 exams in the two years of his studies here could be a testimony to this.
